Orthopedic Physiotherapy

Treatment for the joints, muscles and bones that carry you through the day.

Overview

Restoring movement to joints that have stopped cooperating

Orthopedic physiotherapy treats the musculoskeletal system — joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and bone. It’s where most people start: a shoulder that won’t lift, a knee that aches on stairs, a hip that’s stiffened up with arthritis, or a wrist that hasn’t been the same since the cast came off.

Treatment combines hands-on work to restore joint movement and settle pain with a progressive strengthening program that keeps the improvement. Your therapist re-tests range and strength as you go, so progress is measured rather than guessed at.

What this treatment does for you

Range of motion back

Manual therapy and mobilisation to free up joints that have stiffened after injury, surgery or inactivity.

Pain that settles

Targeted treatment of the tissue actually generating your symptoms, not just the area that hurts.

Strength where it's missing

Graded loading that rebuilds the muscle supporting the joint, so the problem stops recurring.

Surgery avoided where possible

For many shoulder, knee and back problems, a proper rehab program is as effective as an operation.

Your orthopedic physiotherapy program, step by step

1

Examination

Joint-by-joint testing, strength and range measurement, and a review of any imaging you’ve had.

2

Pain and mobility work

Manual therapy, soft-tissue release and mobilisation to get the joint moving comfortably again.

3

Loading program

Progressive strength work, adjusted every few sessions as your capacity increases.

4

Return to normal

Re-testing against your starting numbers, then a maintenance program to protect the result.

Questions about this treatment

Not usually. Most musculoskeletal problems are diagnosed clinically. If your assessment suggests imaging would change the plan, we’ll refer you for it.

Yes. Physiotherapy can’t reverse joint changes, but strengthening the muscles around an arthritic joint reliably reduces pain and improves function — it’s first-line treatment in every major guideline.

As soon as your surgeon or fracture clinic clears you, and sometimes sooner for the joints above and below the cast. Bring your clinic letter.
